Day Off at Joint Base Lewis McChord

Back in 1999-2001, I worked at Fort Lewis just south of Seattle. It's a beautiful area, tall trees, lots of green and close to Puget Sound with its mountains and islands nearby. So coming back here is like coming home, but of course everything is always changing. I was here a year ago on vacation, but this year it seems like even more has changed. More has grown up. New stores, more people. I stopped by Outdoor Rec on Lewis and said Hello. Last year I missed Dave, so i headed out to the skeet range to catch up with him. As we sat visiting, Sam, one of the contractor's from Alaska, came walking through the door. He had been up there until it was done but had gone back home to Washington and was working a job on Lewis rebuilding the skeet range. Small world. I thought Johnny's Greek Cafe had closed but found out it had only changed owners and moved. So Rick, his program partner Brad and I hit it up. Mmmmm. Gyros. Rick invited me over to his place for Dinner, I was taken aback. He invited me to stay. Very gracious. I've known Rick since 2003 when we first met but overall we've only spent a few days together, but he's a great guy. So after visiting Dave some more, rotating my tires at Lewis Autocrafts and surfing the web at Dupont Starbucks waiting out the southbound traffic, I rolled down to meet Rick's wife Carly and their boy Merrick and dog Fly. We had a great dinner and sat around talking about stuff. What an amazing break from the daily driving and hotel grind. It was amazing. Thanks Kivett Family.
Getting extra fuzzy from the road.

Look at that thick green grass.

Sushi Revolution

I decided to stop in Lakewood/Tacoma to see my friends J and C. I tried to call his number but never heard back from him. I figured they were probably out of town. I was right. I stopped by their place and it was locked up, I called Mark and he gave me their other number so I rang them up. They're in Chicago visiting their families. They had a new baby just 10 weeks ago. Sad I missed them. Last year when I was out here for vacay we all went to sushi revolution. I decided to hit it up again. Everything was great except one thing, some weird cold seafood ball. I only downed 14 plates. Last year I think I probably had 20 or so. The place is fun. The food comes by on a conveyor belt on colored plates. The colors represent the cost of the dish. Plates run from $1-$4.

You can see the icky seafood ball on the tan plate. Ick :(

100 Mile House headed South

Super 8 is my friend. Free Internet. Comfortable.

A little snow in 100 Mile House, BC.

This is there tourism building. Notice the giant cross country skis.

Weird combination. Canadian Asian.

Swiss Canadian. The girl told me they had GIANT schnitzel and the best Cordon Bleu in Canada. Of course, they were closed.

German Mexican. They had schnitzel done mexican style. I stopped in but the prices were outrageous and I wasn't that hungry.

Southern British Columbia

As I headed south I went back in time. Alaska is already cold, like single digits, and snowy. As I went south, the Fall started going backwards. Some trees even still had green leaves. It was pretty cool. As I crossed the border, the sun came out completely and it warmed up to high 50s. It was a gorgeous day. Probably almost as warm as the whole summer was in Alaska. Crazy. I can only imagine what it will seem like as I hit Southern Cali with the 80 degree days. It'll be like the Summer I never had. My sense of yearly cycle will probably be all kinds of screwy for awhile.

Canadian Legion Hall

I followed Highway 1 after getting off 97 from Fort Nelson down.

Looks a lot like Montana to me. Guess that makes sense since the border is a couple hundred miles southeast.

Seattle traffic jam

Drove straight into a Seattle traffic jam. I called my friend Cheetah Chapa and caught up. He's a paramedic with the Seattle Fire Department.

Space Needle. You can tell the traffic was dead, I actually took a stable pic.

Can you see Mt. Rainier.

The mountain seems to hover above the horizon.
